Old Muscogee Cemetery

The Old Muscogee Cemetery sits atop a hill above the Perdido River just north of the bridge connecting the highway coming west out of Cantonment, FL to Alabama State highway 112.  Today the work of vandals has nearly destroyed the old grave sites.  Tombstones are broken and grave slabs are slid off of graves.

The cemetery was begun in the late 1800s.  The first burial that has a surviving stone with a death date was that of E.Z. Nellums, an infant who died in June of 1889.  There were probably earlier burials whose markers are fallen or missing or who had only wooden markers that rotted away a century ago.

Those who died at less than age five are numbered in red.  There are 21 of these children with markers still readable today – one third of the total.   Of those born before 1900, the children make up only 21 percent.  After 1900 – 57 percent.  This is probably accounted for by most families before 1900 not being able to afford a stone marker for an infant death.

On 7 December 2008 a group of fifteen volunteers completed a thorough survey of the cemetery. From that survey data a map of the entire cemetery was constructed with each grave site shown along with 71 names still readable after all of the vandalism.
